In the afternoon on February 5th, 2013, the first flight of Vietnam airlines (VNA) took off from Ho chi minh City (the Tan Son Nhat airport) and landed down the Tho Xuan airport (in Thanh hoa province). This event marked a milestone of the company on giving the 39th domestic route into the network. This is true as Vietnam Airlines announced about opening the new route between Ho Chi Minh and Thanh Hoa on January 10, 2013.

With the frequency is five times weekly, the flights between Thanh Hoa and Ho Chi Minh City will facilitate passenger travel more easily; the most beneficial thing for passengers in Thanh Hoa at the peak time when approaching to the Lunar New Year. This open also marks the development and improvement for the transportation system in Thanh Hoa Province. It contributes to the promotion and investment for the socio-economic development.

To be able to put into operation the civil flights, Vietnam Airport Corporation has set a record for the investment on the infrastructure systems, including: The terminal and specialized equipment; all are worth about 250 billion VND for the Tho Xuan. This is the 22nd airport in Vietnam's air network, which is working.

"With the advantage about the more favorable conditions (stable weather, no restrictions on the time frame to receive the aircraft, receiving large aircraft), the Tho Xuan airport can meet good criteria to become a reserve airport for Noi Bai International Airport, " Mr. Pham Quy Tieu, Deputy Minister of Transport said.

According to Mr. Trinh Van Chien, Chairman of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, the introduction of the Tho Xuan airport and operation to open this route does not only meet better for the needs of people's travel and trade, but it also makes an important premise to accelerate progress in the construction of the Nghi Son Industrial area with the United petrochemical project, which is worth more than $6 billion.
